La Garde Freinet perches upon a hilltop in the midst of the Maures Mountains and grew up around La Forte Freinet, the enchanting medieval fortress that still stands guard over the village. The town is a typically Provençal affair and has remained relatively untouched by the kind of development that has affected a number of its neighbors. Whether you are looking for a rental property or a villa for sale, La Garde Freinet offers a range of luxurious accommodation.
La Garde Freinet’s own development was largely founded on the trade of cork and chestnuts, and as you travel to the village you will pass a number of the same trees that once supported these industries. Although there is little remaining evidence of the town’s former cork industry, La Garde Freinet is still famous for its chestnuts and in particular for its ‘chestnut cream’.
You can sample these and many other examples of the wonderful local produce at the town’s weekly market, which is held at the 13th century Place du Marché. Alternatively you may choose to visit one of the many wonderful cafés and restaurants that surround La Place Vielle, the 12th century Square around which the town originally developed.
Wandering through the streets it is not difficult to understand why La Garde Freinet continues to attract so many writers and artists. The cobbled streets, the carved stone fountains, and the flower adorned buildings all combine to form a series of fairy tale images that would not look out of place in any picture book.
