The town takes its name from Giblin de Grimaldi, the Genoese nobleman, to whom William the Good of Provence bequeathed it for helping to drive out the Saracens during the 10th century. A number of Grimaud’s principal buildings date from shortly after this period, including the Chåteau and the Eglise St Michel, both of which date from the 11th century.
Amongst Grimaud’s other notable architectural highlights is ‘la rue des Templiers’, which is notable for its beautifully constructed arcades and the fine detailing of its portals. The street, which is the oldest in the village, is also home to the ‘Maison des Templiers’, which dates from the sixteenth century and was built in the Renaissance style.
